There’s a lot to consider when buying a home. Location. Price. Amenities.
And, the biggest of all, who will be your neighbors?
We always recommend driving around neighborhoods you are considering for your home purchase. It allows you to get a feel for the area and whether it fits with your wants and needs. Are the surrounding homes well kept? Are there any blighted homes that could pull down property values? Do you see folks out walking their dogs or does everyone stay behind closed doors?
What you can’t see is if there are any registered sex offenders living nearby.
Despite what many people think, your REALTOR® is not obligated to research or share that information with you. Truly, you probably wouldn’t want your agent to be the source of that information, since we don’t know beyond a shadow of a doubt that what we’re sharing is 100% accurate. Not to mention that people move in and out of neighborhoods all of the time, so what your agent knows may be old information.
How can you do your own due diligence?
The Louisiana purchase agreement provides all of the information you need to access the state database of registered sex offenders. This is the official source of all offender registrations throughout the state and allows you to search any address that you may be considering before even setting foot through the door.
