We went to the festival on both Friday and Saturday this year (it continues today from 2-9 pm). The organizers have done a great job of getting some really good musical acts, a variety of food booths, a big selection of rides and games and some local vendors to participate.
The good
- Irma Thomas put on an incredible show – her voice is as strong as ever and she is a consummate entertainer
- Easy parking
- $5 admission price
The not-so-good
- Prices for rides ran from $3-$5 each, with no pay-one-price wrist bands. This can put the cost of spending an evening or afternoon out of reach for some families.
- Small crowds, since there was so much competition from other events in the city and the threat of rain hung over both days
- Vendors who closed up their booths before the festival was over on Saturday night – we had a teen with us that really wanted some Dipping Dots, but they packed up and left before the last band was even finished playing
While the weather wasn’t exactly what they were hoping for on either day, and the crowds were thin, there was still time to listen to some music, visit with friends and blow my diet for the week (pulled pork nachos, anyone?).
Here are a few of the sights…
- Voodoo Gumbo
- Those nachos!!
- Food and beer booths
- Carnival games
- Bumper cars
- Irma Thomas
- Michael Aaron and the Strays
- Bag of Donuts
- Lots of No Tolls shirts
- Carnival food
- Dancing to Irma Thomas
