School is out and I’m already thinking about a summer get away. We could easily spend time on the beaches of Alabama, just a 3 or 4 hour ride away. We could hop a flight and be almost anywhere in the United States within just a few hours. But, instead of spending extra money and time traveling this year, we are considering a “staycation”.
What’s a staycation? That’s when you vacation in your own city or town. No need to fly. No need to drive very far at all. No need for hotels, although certainly that would add to the fun. Not even a real need to eat out, but to me it’s not vacation if I have to cook.
One of my favorite places to visit since it reopened last year is Fort Jackson. A civil war fort and museum on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, it’s less than an hour down the road in Buras, LA and the beautiful grounds are steeped in history. Years ago, it was a regular destination for school field trips, but I had not been there in years and I’m thrilled to see this piece of Civil War and Louisiana history reopened.

During our visit, I had the camera ready. I bet you’ll find plenty of your own picture spots…Click any image for larger view or to view as a gallery.

I had forgotten how much fun it was to visit Fort Jackson as a kid. I am glad it is reopened and I am going to plan a trip with my kids.
