The Educator: New Orleans West Bank Business of the Week

The school social studies fair is this week for my 6th grader. Of course, like all 12 year old boys, he has procrastinated on finishing up his project on the History of Mardi Gras. With no school today, we were running around the West Bank, looking for just the right “stuff” to decorate his backboard and complete his vision of what he wants to do.
Driving through Gretna, LA we stopped in at the Educator and I had to share with everyone what a great place this is. The store is filled to the brim with project supplies, school and art supplies and educational books, software and CDs. What a wonderful West Bank resource for home schoolers, parents and teachers!
If I was a teacher, I could go crazy in a place like this - there were so many wonderful classroom decorations for every grade level, along with more paints, pens and art supplies for children than I’ve ever seen in one place.
I was greeted by the very friendly and helpful staff as soon as I entered, and directed to just the right section. After we picked out our purchases, we wandered through the rest of the store, just browsing and looking through their huge selection. Cute note and post-it pads, awards, ribbons, stickers…the list goes on and on.
If you are looking for a teacher gift, a gift certificate from the Educator would be a fabulous choice…they are good at both the Gretna and Metairie locations and never expire. Much more useful than another “World’s Greatest Teacher” knick-knack, in my opinion!
The next time you are shopping for school or art supplies on the West Bank, be sure to stop in at the Educator. Located at 1760 Stumpf Blvd in Gretna, store hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 am - 5 pm. Call them at (504) 367-8660 with questions or visit their website for current specials and to sign up for the Educator Newsletter.
Let’s continue to support our own West Bank businesses.

Stonebridge: West Bank Neighborhood of the Week
The West Bank Real Estate spotlight this week is on the Stonebridge subdivision. Stonebridge is a large, limited access community with homes in both Gretna and Harvey, LA. Low association fees of $400 per year support the active home owners association and provide subdivision security patrols.
Built around three 9 hole golf courses, Stonebridge offers a wide array of custom built homes with the most desirable locations lining the courses. Entrances on Wall Blvd. in Gretna and Manhattan Blvd. in Harvey make Stonebridge a quick commute to anywhere on the New Orleans West Bank, with nearby shopping, dining, playgrounds, libraries, churches and schools. Easy access to the West Bank Expressway and the Crescent City Connection means that you are only minutes from downtown New Orleans.
The clubhouse at the Stonebridge Golf Club has recently been renovated and is now open, featuring a pro shop, banquet facilities and the Lounge at Stonebridge, which is open to the public.
Stonebridge Golf Club memberships are available for individuals, families and corporate members. Only 150 memberships will be accepted for 2008, so don’t delay in applying for yours!

The Show Must Go On! Krewe of Choctaw River Parade 2008

Even though it was a dreary, rainy and cold New Orleans morning, the Krewe of Choctaw 2008 River Parade went off without a hitch!
After running through the rain to the Gretna ferry landing, we boarded the Steamboat Natchez…I love the paddle wheels, but it was VERY cold and windy out there on the water.
Inside, however, it was warm and cozy. Music, dancing, food and drinks….
Jambalaya… The best Bloody Mary ever!
Oh, and lots of great people, ready to kick off the 2008 Carnival season.
It’s Carnival Time! 2007 Chief and 2008 Medicine Man
2008 Choctaw Princess 2008 Chief Choctaw
2008 Court - Krewe of Choctaw
Chief and Princess 2008, with the maids and Medicine Man
We sailed down the Mississippi, past the crescent in the river at Algiers Point. If not for the overcast day, the pictures would be perfect…
The Creole Queen, docked at Canal St. St. Louis Cathedral
The Crescent City Connection The Aquarium of the Americas
Jax Brewery Sculptures at Woldenburg Park
If you weren’t with us, you missed a great time! I sure do hope the weather is better for the street parade next weekend. Come on out to Terrytown or Gretna on Saturday and see me. (I’ll be on float #17 on the drivers side) Yell loud and I’ll throw you something, mister!
Happy Mardi Gras!
New Orleans West Bank Rentals - January, 2008

I have received several calls recently from people who are weighing whether to put their New Orleans West Bank home on the market to sell or to list it as a rental property.
Before you decide to sell, you may want to check the 2007 sales statistics for
your West Bank neighborhood. A look back at history gives you a starting point before jumping into the real estate market. I can tell you personally, though, that since the 1st of the year, my phone has been ringing more! Potential buyers, agents setting appointments on my listings, inquiries from folks who are thinking about selling. If you are ready to be a part of the 2008 West Bank real estate market, feel free to contact me and we can get the ball rolling right away.
If, however, you are interested in renting your home instead of selling it, let’s take a look at the competition in the rental market. Remember, these are only rentals listed with an agent - private rentals are not included.

West Bank School Promotes Seat Belt Safety
When I drove up to the gates of St. Anthony School in Gretna this morning, I was convinced that there was a disaster of some sort happening…there were at least a half dozen people in white medical coats, all standing in the parking lot at the car pool drop off spot. What the heck?
It turns out that the LSU School of Nursing, in conjunction with Buckle Up America, was giving seatbelt safety handouts to all of the parents, with a Life Saver attached. What a great reminder to all those moms and dads that each and every one of us needs to buckle up every time we get in the car.
From the Buckle Up America handout:
- Traffic crashes kill over 40,000 people a year. They are the #1 cause of
child deaths. - Every 9 seconds, someone in America is injured in a traffic crash and every 13 minutes someone is killed.
- 2/3 of the drivers and passengers killed in traffic crashes are not buckled up
- Every day in America, around 900 children are injured and seven are killed in car crashes. Half of those would be alive today if they had been properly protected.
- The costs of traffic accidents to all of us as a society is $150 BILLION dollars every year
- Children 12 and under should ride properly restrained in the back seat
- Never put a rear-facing child seat in front of a passenger air bag
- Keep 10 inches between the center of the steering wheel air bag cover and an adult’s breastbone
Thanks to St. Anthony School for considering this issue important enough to bring in these nursing students to raise awareness. None of us wants a friend, family member or neighbor to end up a statistic. BUCKLE UP FOR SAFETY!
For more information about seatbelt safety, including a safety seat checklist, visit the Buckle Up America website.
