When military reservists are called to active duty, they not only leave behind their families, but their jobs as well.  Although some large companies may military hats continue to pay a salary and benefits, most do not.  When military pay falls short of a reservist’s civilian salary, how does a family cope with this financial loss?

The State of Louisiana has a Military Family Assistance Fund that provides help for activated reservists and their family members to assist with the costs of food, housing and medical services.  Eligible families may receive up to $10,000 per year in assistance from the Louisiana Department of Social Services.

Who is Eligible?

“Any Louisiana resident who is a member of a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces or the National Guard and who has served a minimum of thirty consecutive days of active duty or active state service since September 11, 2001 may apply for assistance from the MFA fund. Immediate family members of eligible solders may apply on behalf of the soldier”.  (From the Louisiana Treasury Department website)
