A good REALTOR® friend of mine, Amanda Hall of Fort Worth, Texas recently wrote a blog post about unclaimed property searches in Texas. As she so rightly pointed out to me, the risk of Louisiana residents having unclaimed property being held by the state is high in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Unclaimed property can be as diverse as:
- Funds from savings and checking accounts
- Uncashed payroll or cashiers checks
- Business funds from closed companies
- Customer deposits or overpayments
- Utility deposits
- Stocks and dividends
- …and much more!
The state holds these funds until they are claimed by the rightful owner and there is no time limit on filing a claim for your property. Since the unclaimed property law was enacted in 1972, the State of Louisiana has collected over $250 million and returned over $65 million dollars to residents.
There is NO FEE for claiming your property from the state. Do not be
taken in by the various companies and websites offering to find your unclaimed property. The Louisiana Treasury Department website has information in English, Spanish and Cajun French. Additionally, it provides a link to a FREE search nationwide in the event that you have moved from another state.
Visit the Louisiana Treasury Department today…you may find a hidden treasure waiting there for you!
